Last year we posted about the thousands of individuals and services that bc211 has connected.  While we receive thousands of referral requests for social service resources, our online directory – The Red Book Online – also contains listings for myriad community arts and culture organizations that produce works and provide opportunities to get involved. Individuals and groups can utilize our listings to locate and connect with those who share similar interests in their community.

Connecting through Art

There is a belief that it is hard to make friends and connect with people in Vancouver. The resources we provide can help to combat that view and encourage collaboration among individuals and groups. Whether you are looking to volunteer with an organization, donate to a program that represents your values, connect with groups for projects, or simply want to find out about community arts organizations putting on events, The Red Book Online is a nexus that can assist your search.

A search for “arts” in The Red Book provides over 240 results, “performance” provides 70, and “festival” produces over 60 listings highlighting may organizations involved in their communities. Some of these listings like the Circle Craft Co-Op or Gallery Gachet are galleries or studio spaces providing exhibitions to the public. Other groups like the CircusWest Performing Arts Society and Arts Umbrella offer programs that give children, youth, and adults an opportunity to participate in the arts. Still other groups like the Powell Street Festival Society, Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival, or the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society produce specific events throughout the year for the enjoyment of the community.

One of our newer listings for arts organizations is TomoeArts, a theatre company producing and teaching Japanese classical dance with an innovative twist.  And if dance is your cup of tea, check out the abundance of studios and classes offered through local community centres.

bc211 is a hub for organizations throughout the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast. Arts organizations can feel isolated as they strive to produce their work. Individuals may not be aware of the number and variety of organizations that regularly provide performances and produce beautiful pieces. We are here to connect organizations, audiences, patrons, performers and individuals to strengthen our lively community.
